Class 05

Introduced in 1955 as one of the many varied types of small shunter to replace steam engines, the Class 05 once numbered 68 machines. With the general decline of the railways in the 1960's virtually all of these early designs disappeared from the UK system leaving the standard Class 08 and its derivatives. Possibly due to its isolation from the mainland, the Isle Of Wight held on to the last of the Class 05's, 2554. Used to propel permanent way trains around the small island, 2554 became 05 001 under the 1974 TOPS renumbering scheme, and was later placed into departmental stock as 97803.

Engine: Gardner 8L3 of 204hp.

Number: 05 001

Previous No. Series: 11140, 2554.
