Class 26 

 

An initial twenty of these BRCW machines were ordered under the modernisation programme and proved one of the most successful designs. With Sulzer engines and Crompton Parkinson electrical equipment, a further twenty six locomotives were ordered thereafter with modified bogie suspension and weight saving OLEO pneumatic buffers in place of the original oval type. On introduction the locomotives were allocated to the Eastern Region of BR for work in the London area, but all the class later travelled north to work in Scotland.

Engine: Sulzer 6-cyl 6LDA28 of 1160bhp at 750rpm.
