Class 27

The Class 27 locomotives were built to the same design as the Class 26 machines but featured an uprated Sulzer 6LDA28-B engine with GEC electrical equipment. Initial allocations were to the Scottish Region, the NER, and the LMR Midland Lines, but as with their Class 26 counterparts later moved north of the border. In 1970, 24 of the class were converted to push/pull working for a high speed service between Edinburgh and Glasgow. The locomotives were divided into two sub-classes 27/1 & 27/2 - the Class 27/2 machines were provided with electrical train heating by means of a Deutz diesel engine and generator. All the converted examples were duel braked and fitted with driver/ guard communication equipment.
