| Designed
and built by BRCW expressly for the Southern Region, the 98 Class 33's
were a direct derivative of the companies Class 26/27 locomotives.
Introduced from January 1960, these machines were the first on British
Railways to be delivered new with electric train heating. Twelve
examples were built with narrow (8' 8") bodies for use on the
restricted Hastings line and nineteen machines were later converted to
work in multiple with SR EMU stock. Twenty-one Class 33's are currently
in preservation.
