Possibly the most successful of all the Western Region diesel-hydraulic designs. Built by Beyer Peacock of Gorton, Manchester the class eventually numbered 101 in total. As with all the diesel-hydraulic classes they were earmarked for early withdrawal due to their non-standard transmissions, with D7006 & D7081 becoming the first locomotives to leave BR service in September 1971, the latter seeing just short of eight years of work. Four examples (D7017, D7018, D7029 & D7076) survive today in preservation. (*Note:- the title 'Hymek' derives from the locomotives' transmission, hydro-mechanical.*) Engine: Bristol-Siddeley/ Maybach MD870 of 1700bhp. Numbers: D7000 - D7100 (no TOPS renumbering) The Class 35 Fleet - Click Here Related
