Class 37

Introduced in 1961, the Class 37 went on to become the standard Type 3 unit eventually totaling 309 machines. Basically a smaller version of its Class 40 counterpart, the locomotives carried the smaller 12 cylinder English Electric engine. The familiar long nose was also retained housing traction motor blowers and compressor/exhauster equipment. Today less than thirty-five remain working on UK railways, and at present, 28 locomotives survive in preservation.

Engine: English Electric 12 cyl. 12CSVT of 1750bhp (1306kW)

Numbers: 37 001 - 37 308. Later modifications led to locomotives to be renumbered in the 37 3XX, 37 4XX, 37 5XX, 37 6XX, 37 7XX and 37 9XX ranges.

Previous No. Series: D6700 - D6999
