| Introduced
in 1961, the Class 37 went on to become the standard Type 3 unit
eventually totaling 309 machines. Basically a smaller version of its
Class 40 counterpart, the locomotives carried the smaller 12 cylinder
English Electric engine. The familiar long nose was also retained
housing traction motor blowers and compressor/exhauster equipment.
Today less than thirty-five remain working on UK railways, and at present,
28 locomotives survive in preservation.
