Class 44

 

Ten pilot scheme locomotives that led to the production of the numerous Class 45 & 46 machines. All named after English and Welsh 'peaks', their train heating equipment was removed early in their lives and the class could be seen working Midland freight services out of Toton depot until their final withdrawal in 1980. Two (44 004 & 44 008) remain in preservation.

Engine: Sulzer 12-cyl 12LDA28-A twin bank pressure charged of 2300bhp at 750rpm
