| The
standard type 4 medium powered main line locomotive adopted for mass
introduction was this fleet of Brush/BR locomotives derived from
various prototypes and previous designs. A total of 512 locomotives of
the same type were built. Five locomotives (D1702-6) were originally built as
Class 48 with French built 12LVA24 engines, but all later reverted to Class 47 with standard
Sulzers. A
few remain in service today, but their days are numbered. 38 have so
far been preserved. Engine: Sulzer 12-cyl 12LDA28C of 2580bhp (1925kW). Numbers: 47 001 - 299 (steam heat), 47 301 - 381(no train heating), 47 401 - 529 (electric train heating). During this period, locomotives were being converted from steam heating to electric train heating, and thus were removed from the 47 0XX range and added to the 47 4XX range.
