Class 47 (Part 2.)

The standard type 4 medium powered main line locomotive adopted for mass introduction was this fleet of Brush/BR locomotives derived from various prototypes and previous designs. A total of 512 locomotives of the same type were built. Five locomotives (D1702-6) were originally built as Class 48 with French built 12LVA24 engines, but all later reverted to Class 47 with standard Sulzers. A few remain in service today, but their days are numbered. 38 have so far been preserved.

Engine: Sulzer 12-cyl 12LDA28C of 2580bhp (1925kW).

Numbers: 47 001 - 299 (steam heat), 47 301 - 381(no train heating), 47 401 - 529 (electric train heating). During this period, locomotives were being converted from steam heating to electric train heating, and thus were removed from the 47 0XX range and added to the 47 4XX range.

Previous No. Series: D1100-11, D1500-1999.
