The Class 52 'Westerns' were the final development of the Western Regions fleet of diesel-hydraulic locomotives and as such were deemed as non-standard and scheduled for early withdrawal. The class became undoubtedly the most popular machines to run on the BR system possibly due to their unique styling, and the seven members of the class that survive in preservation today prove popular attractions.

Engines: Two Maybach MD655 12-cyl 'v' type of 1350hp at 1500rpm.

Numbers: D1000 - D1073 (no TOPS re-numbering)
