Class 74

With the impending electrification of the Bournemouth route, BR realised that further, higher powered electro-diesels would be required in addition to the Class 73's. Rather than build new, it was decided to convert ten of the Class 71 electric locomotives to duel power. The conversions were carried out at Crewe works and the rebuilt locomotives entered service in 1967.

Engine: Paxman/ English Electric of 650hp.

Numbers: 74 001 - 74 010

Previous No. Series: E6101 - E6110 (originally allocated E7001 - E7010, but never carried)
