Class 81

After the disastrous results of mass introducing untried diesel designs, the BTC decided the later a.c. electric locomotives should only consist of only five prototype builds, designated classes AL1 - AL5 split into two power classifications type A and type B, the latter for use with heavy freight trains. To reduce problems even further, the classes were to have common features; Bo-Bo wheel arrangement, twin pantographs and the same layout of cab controls.
The first of the new electrics, Class AL1 (later Class 81), No. E3001 entered service on the 27th November 1959 having been built by British Thomson-Houston/ BRCW.

Equipment: Four AEI (BTH) spring-borne dc traction motors of 847hp (continuous) driving through Alstholm quill drive.

Numbers: 81 001 - 81 022

Previous No. Series: E3001 - E3023, E3096/E3097
