Class 84

Original Class AL4 design built by General Electric/ North British Locomotive Company. By far the least successful of the prototypes and by 1967 all of the class had been placed in store pending modifications. The class continued to be troublesome, even after remedial work, and in 1976 it was decided that a cost limit was to be set for repairs sealing the fate for these machines. By 1978, six of the class had been withdrawn; the rest lasted for a further two years. The Research Centre at Derby claimed two (84 003/9) for use as mobile load banks, and a further two (84 002/10) were returned to GEC for experiments after which they were broken up. One machine (84 001) was saved for the National Collection and can be seen today at the National Railway Museum, York.
