Class 86

 

Original AL6 locomotives for use on the East Coast Main Line. After trials with the AL1 - AL5's (Classes 81 - 85), the Class 86's became the standard electric machines. Built by British Railways and Vulcan Foundry, just over half of the class remain in service today.

Equipment: Four AEI (BTH) d.c. traction motors of 847hp (continuous) driving through Alsthom quill drive.

Numbers (As at 1980): 86 001 - 86 039, 86 101 - 86 103,  86 204 - 261.
