During the early years of the
1980's, the Scottish Region of BR required a source of electrical power to heat
trains on their remote western lines. Already planned were a fleet of converted
Class 37 locomotives but a short term solution was required. This resulted in
three Class 25 machines being modified accordingly. Now unable to be used as
conventional locomotives, the machines lost their yellow front ends and gained a
paint scheme similar to that of the coaching stock. The trio were affectionately
named ETHEL's (electric train heating ex-locomotives) and painted nameplates
were applied. Above, 97250 ETHEL 1 (ex-25 310) stands at Derby Carriage
& Wagon
works in May 1987 though its visit is unknown; it is possible that the
locomotives systems were being tested with the coaching stock at the plant, or
indeed eth coaching stock being tested with the locomotive! For a comprehensive account of the
ETHEL's click here.
