An unidentified 253 set heads towards our first generation DMU on the South Wales line on a rather murky 27th October 1979. Our unit is bound for Newport and the HST, the capital. The large black rectangle seen in the top right of the photo is the Danger Overhead Live Wires sticker whilst the black marks in the centre are not dirt on the negative but flies on the windscreen! In the foreground can be seen the controls on the right hand side of the DMU cab. Note the green 'clear' signal for our train. Photos like this could never be repeated from todays 'modern' trains.
