One of the 20 1958 pilot scheme locomotives, 31 008 (D5508) at Stratford, 11th July 1981. These first twenty Class 31's could not be worked in multiple with the rest of the production fleet, as shown by the red circle coupling code above the buffers. The rest of the class carried a blue star symbol.
