A somewhat rare photograph of one of the first Class 40's to be withdrawn. 40 045 was removed from traffic in August 1976 and was moved to Derby Locomotive Works for component recovery. The locomotive only lasted a further six months before being cut up at the works in March 1977. Inspection of the remains revealed why these huge machines weighed in at 136 tons - the bodywork plating was some 1/8th in. thick!
