In its final months, 44 008 Penyghent gained a white bodyside stripe, white roof and red bufferbeams. Its visit seen here at Derby Locomotive Works was thought to be for scrapping, but in reality the locomotive was to recieve an engine from one of its scrapped sisters. Rumours were also abound about Penyghent being secured for the National Collection at York which was not to be. 44 008 did survive, though, and is now one of the two preserved examples based at Peak Rail in the Derbyshire Dales.
