
Detail of the damage sustained to Class 45/0 No. 45 067 which led it to be the first Class 45 to be withdrawn in July 1977. The locomotive was heading a Glasgow - Nottingham train on the 8th July 1977 when it ran into a derailed coal train at Benneley Junction, near Illkeston, Derbyshire. At least four of its coaches left the track and repairs to permanent way, signal wires and an overbridge took three days. The machine languished at Derby Locomotive Works, where it is seen here, for nearly another three years before cutting up commenced. 6th June 1978.
