The ill-fated 46 009 fresh from overhaul at Derby Locomotive Works pictured at Derby during the late 1970's. The Class 46 was spectacularly, and controversially, reduced to scrap on the 17th July 1984 when it was used in a crash simulation to test the durability of nuclear flasks. Footage of the event can be viewed below.
