In April 1978 46 024 entered Derby Locomotive Works with what seemed minor collision damage compared with other damaged locos of the time. The writing was on the wall however for the Class 46's and a repair was not sanctioned. The locomotive became the second of its class to be withdrawn. 2nd May 1978.

By the 5th August 46 024 had entered the shops and all re-usable parts had been removed. Here the locomotive is pictured minus both front ends, traction motor blowers and bodyside grills.

10th October of the same year and only a few days remain of this 139 ton machine.
