With Stratfords hallmark silver
roof, 47 579 James Nighthall G.C draws to a halt at the end of its
journey at Liverpool Street, 9th February 1983. The brass plate beneath the
nameplate explains the reason for the title:- One of two locomotives named
after Driver B Gimbert and fireman J Nightall of March who were awarded the
George Cross for their action in saving the town of Soham from severe damage by
a burning ammunition train on 2nd June 1944. Nightall was killed and Benjamin
Gimbert received serious injuries.
