For some unknown reason, the pioneer diesels were very sparsely named and new namings were actively discouraged. But by the late 1970's the naming policy suddenly changed with the announcement that the Class 50 diesels and the Class 87 electrics would receive names throughout the whole of their classes. Here 47 085 (D1670), seen at Crewe works, is one of the former examples bearing its 1960's title.
