In 1978 it was announced that all Class 50 locomotives were to be named after British naval warships, reviving a tradition started with the now scrapped Class 42/43's. A new style of typeface, still seen today, distinguished these new plates from earlier 1960's applied examples on other classes. Cast in alluminium, they were produced at Swindon Works.
