In 1978 the BRB requested a new livery scheme for main line locomotives expected to remain in service for many years to come. After several designs were considered, the result was the painting of 56 036 at Stratford in what is now known as 'large logo' livery. Following the approval of this scheme, the Class 50 locomotives followed suit on visiting works along with many of the Class 47's. The livery was adopted 'as standard' for the Class 56's in production and from 56 084 the locomotives were delivered new in these colours. 56 036 is pictured at Toton on the 9th June 1979. One of the leading railway publications of the time reported that (bearing in mind this was the very first diversion from rail blue) "Class 56 no. 56 036 has been seen carrying a garish modified livery" (!).
*In March 2006 this historic locomotive was finally broken up at CF Booths scrapyard, Rotherham.*
