After construction, 56 042 was selected to undergo a series of tests, and after release from Doncaster Works, handed over to the Research Centre at Derby, and fitted with experimental CP1 style bogies with the objectives of reducing manufacturing and operating costs. An offspring of this bogie design, the CP3, was fitted under the Class 58 locomotives. The locomotive is seen at the Research Centre on the 14th August, 1978.
