The ten pilot scheme North British Class 16 locomotives were possibly the most least successful of all the locomotives introduced under the modernisation plan, and all were removed from traffic by the end of 1968. Powered by a Paxman 16HXL 800hp engine with GEC traction motors the machines even supported spoked wheels. D8405 is seen at Stratford on the 16th May 1965 in the company of Class 15 No. D8242, Class 37 No. D6703 and Class 31 machines Nos. D5667, D5656 & D5594.
