Built way back in 1951 by Metropolitan-Vickers, gas turbine locomotive No. 18100 was selected in the late fifties for conversion to a prototype locomotive for the then new 25kv overhead power system.  Initially it was renumbered E1000 but eventually became E2001 with the manufacture of the production ac electrics. The non-standard machine retained its black and silver livery throughout its varied life and after withdrawal in April 1968 it was moved to the test facility at Rugby where it remained for several years. E2001 was finally reduced to scrap by J. Cashmore at Great Bridge in November 1972. The above photograph sees the machine at Rugby during its final few months. (21st July 1972).
