The 1956 British Railways Passenger Network Map

Issued in 1956 in the rather bland two-colour style of the time, this map must have been the blueprint for the modern traction programme and shows why well over two thousand new diesel locomotives were required to cover the rail system. Warning: These pages contain very large images and may take some time to appear for dial-up users!
