Electrification of the ECML saw many changes to the stations along its route. Here the north end of York station is pictured, and as can be seen, the platforms have been somewhat rationalised to make way for new track alignments. The roof appears now missing from the platform canopy but the station still retains its clean and tidy appearance. Reference between the April 1980 photo of 40 158 and the 'today' shot can be made with the large square door on the platform building (to the right hand side of the DMU, and to the side of the police van in the modern photo).
