A familiar sight to enthusiasts visiting the works, the Spike Island scrapyard. Not only did locomotives meet their fate here, but anything ferrous the works no longer had a use for, was reduced to the smallest pieces possible. The view shows Class 25/0 No. 25 030 during its final days on the 27th January 1980.

With the development of the new Pride Park, all traces of this area of the works have long since gone. Indeed, the only way I could be sure of the exact spot, was to take co-ordinates and measurements off old and new maps and transpose the two. Such was the years of contamination of oil, diesel and grease in this area, the whole of the topsoil had to be removed and replaced with new before any redevelopment could take place. 12th April 2003.
